Caberos (cabergoline) is a potent dopamine receptor agonist used to prevent side-effects (such as gynecomastia and sexual dysfunction) caused by elevated prolactin levels.
In-vitro animal studies show that cabergoline has a direct inhibitory effect on the prolactin secretion in the lactotroph cells of the pituitary gland resulting in decreased serum prolactin levels.
The secretion of prolactin by the anterior pituitary is mainly under hypothalamic inhibitory control, likely mediated through release of dopamine.
